[Archive] That Telangana Eye Center started with two rooms

What you should know

Three decades ago, eye treatment centers were not opened with private investment. Hospitals had small eye treatment units. Common people used to remember Eye Hospital of Tripureshwar as the only place for eye treatment.

Until the 1990s, there was no modern technology for cataract surgery in Nepal. During the cataract surgery, many people lost their eyesight and even the patients who were said to be successful had to wear thick glasses.

In this background, after studying from India, Dr. Sanduk Ruit had the opportunity to work in Veer Hospital. The encouragement of a doctor senior to him and the experience of working in an eye patient treatment camp gave him the courage to become an eye doctor . That motivation made him an eye doctor .

The research done by Dr. Sanduk Ruit found out that many patients do not regain their eyesight during cataract surgery in Nepal. The research done by him showed that he had to wear very thick glasses due to the lack of lenses, even though he got eyesight from the surgery . He started researching how cataract surgery can be done with modern procedures in Nepal. This required an 'intra ocular lens'. The hospital had to manufacture such lenses themselves. Ruit and Dr. Rita Gurung took two rooms in Thapathali and started treatment. Both of them started surgery at eye center. During Rita's surgery, Dr. Ruit would check and Rita would check when Ruit operated.  Near the

examination room was a small room for making 'intra ocular lenses'. Telganga eye center has developed from these two rooms. They gradually went out of Kathmandu valley and started putting lenses in their eyes.

The Telganga Eye Center was established in the same hospital in 1994 under the Nepal Blindness Control Program with the financial and technical support of the Australian Government and Australia-based Fred Hollows Foundation. Dr. On Sanduk's own initiative, after getting land in Telganga, the facilities provided from Thapathali were moved there . Its planner and operator is Sanduk. Since then, eye transplants have been started. Cataract surgery was started in that hospital from May 12, 2051. The center, established as a non-governmental organization, started providing free lenses to the poor who could not afford them. According to the then director general of the center, Vishnu Neupane, the lens, which costs 40 to 200 US dollars abroad, was available for 600 rupees in Nepal.

'It is not possible to make the lens in Nepal . Many people suggested that it should not be done," said Dr. Ruit remembers the past incident and has been giving his opinion through the media from time to time. Mike Limsky, Medical Director Sanduk, David Moran of Australia's Fred Hollows Foundation, Professor Hugh Taylor of Australia's University of Melbourne, and Jagdish Ghimire, President of Nepal Eye Program Australia, gave detailed information about the establishment of the eye center and cataract surgery with modern technology in a press conference held on May 23, 2051 in Kathmandu. The center was operated with the aim of providing world-class eye services.  A modern eye treatment center was established with the help of

Australia. The Fred Hollows Foundation was operated under the name of Fred Hollows from Australia. The foundation provided financial and technical support to establish the center. The center was inaugurated by the then king Birendra on May 24, 2051.

The center was set to produce 80,000 'intra ocular lenses' per year . Before dying of cancer, Australian ophthalmologist Fred Hollows wished to establish an intraocular lens laboratory to provide excellent eye care services in Nepal.

In the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala praised Hollows for wanting to establish a center with modern eye treatment technology in Nepal despite being a cancer patient. In the message sent by the Prime Minister of Australia Paul Keating in the program, he said that the dream of Hollows has come true by saying that an international level eye treatment center has been established in Nepal. In his message, he congratulated Nepal's Eye Program and Hollows Foundation. Gavy Hollows, the widow of Fred Hollows, said that her husband's wish has come true because he established a center in Fred's name to treat eye patients. Australian Ambassador Les Douglas said that with the eye program, any task can be completed if a person wishes. Raja Birendra observed the new technology, management and treatment rooms in eye treatment . Kantipur published a news titled "Inauguration of International Eye Center by Shri 5" on May 25, 2051, covering the context of establishing and operating an international eye treatment center in Nepal. The eye center that was operating at that time is now in the process of becoming a university soon. The bill to establish a university is under consideration in the parliament . As much as the story of 32 years ago is a struggle, now it has taken root as a trusted organization to the public as Telganga Eye Foundation.

dr. Sanduk is now famous not only in Nepal but also in the world. He has returned the eyes of many citizens of the world . Arks have proved to be a 'blessing' for the residents of remote parts of Nepal.
