Finally, facing challenges from inside and outside the party, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai decided to become a candidate in the by-election from Kathmandu-1. He started his election campaign from Baneshwar in Kathmandu. On the first day of the campaign, he addressed a gathering of workers in Baneshwar on 3rd January 2050.
Madan Bhandari, the late general secretary of UML, told the current general secretary Madhav Nepal about my need in the parliament. Nilambar Acharya is the witness of this," said Bhattarai. During his address to the workers, he also said that he is going to stand up in this by-election to prove that he lost wrongfully in the previous election.
Despite the extreme discontent within the party, it was decided that Nepali Congress President Bhattarai will be a candidate for the Member of Parliament in the by-elections to be held in 2050. There was pressure from one side including the party's supreme leader Ganeshman Singh to make him a candidate, while another group including Prime Minister Giriz Prasad Koiralaka was against it .
But due to pressure within the party, the Congress Central Committee decided to make Bhattarai a candidate. Despite the decision of the party, the dissatisfaction of the Koirala side remained.
UML had decided to nominate Bidya Bhandari as a candidate in the by-election to be held in Kathmandu-1, which was vacant after the death of UML general secretary Bhandari in a Dasdhunga accident. General Secretary Bhandari's wife Bidya Devi's decision to run as a candidate was an external challenge for Bhattarai. Because, the death of General Secretary Bhandari was publicized all over the country as "someone's conspiracy". It was assumed that the public may vote for Vidyadevi due to the suspicion of an unnatural accident.
Bhattarai's decision to be a candidate in the by-election, election campaign and dissatisfaction of the Koirala camp prepared by journalist Taranath Dahal titled 'Information about the reasons why Bhattarai had to be a candidate' was published by Kantipur Dainik on 4th December 2050 . There was talk of non-cooperation within the party in the by-election against Bhattarai, who was defeated by UML General Secretary Bhandari.
