Suman Sayami is known as a leader of the Guthi movement against road expansion and for the rights of locals.

He has been campaigning against development that is being done by destroying the rights that locals have been enjoying for generations. In the last general election, he was defeated by Biraj Bhakta Maharjan of the National Independent Party for the House of Representatives from Kathmandu Constituency No. 8. Now he is preparing to be a candidate from the Nepali Communist Party in the February 21 House of Representatives election. After joining the NCP on Wednesday, he told Kantipur that he entered politics with the idea of against the politics of 'stunts'. A brief conversation with him by Ganga BC of Kantipur:

You are a person who campaigns for the art and culture of Kathmandu and the rights of locals. Why did you join the Nepali Communist Party?

My main objective is to do something for the country. We are 40 activists who are affiliated with the NCP. The country is currently in a difficult situation and crisis. The country is mired in confusion and uncertainty. There is a pressure of foreign intervention. The kind of populism and propaganda politics that is happening now. I joined the NCP because I felt that the politics of 'stunts' would not solve the problem.

Nothing is sustainable without struggle and hard work. Today, they are dreaming of becoming the Prime Minister based on a technology. We are worried about where the country will end up by misleading the people. Youth should come into politics. There should be generational transfer. But what is happening in the name of generational transfer does not provide a solution. We should also combine passion and intelligence in politics. I had put this matter to the so-called new parties, but they did not want to hear it. We thought that we would complete a revolution by launching a revolution campaign. But since the country was plunged into further crisis after the Genji movement, did they think that we should join political forces? With this belief, I talked to all the top leaders. I am saying that I have to join a power to save the country by collaborating with parties that share our issues, ideas, and objectives.

It is said that there are no opportunities for youth in old parties. Did you join the NCP looking for opportunities?

If you can show hard work, there is opportunity everywhere. It has been 12 years since I showed hard work in the Kathmandu Valley. I was not called just then. I believe that the NCP will give the kind of responsibility that should be given to run the Valley. Hard work brings responsibility. If you give me this without doing any work, who will give me responsibility? Responsibility is not given in one's own home. The country is a home, right?

Now you are the Kathmandu commander of the NCP?

I have already been commanding the Valley. In every sector, in every place, I have taken the lead in solving the problems there. Be it Guthi or road expansion or river measurement or fast track dispute, I have also led the campaign on the issue of smart city. I have come out on the streets saying that development should be everywhere but no one should be forced to move from their place. If someone else had done this work, I would have happily done business.

What do you plan to do after joining the NCP?

I already have a social plan. Now I believe that a political plan should be prepared. I have come into politics with that preparation and have come into politics with all the roadmaps and to build a base. I have come into politics by building a social foundation. I have a plan to work according to that.

Are you also preparing for the upcoming elections?

My Kathmandu constituency number is 8. I defeated the coalition in the last election. At that time, I did not have a political plan, only a social plan. At that time, I was second. Now I have everything including a strong party. There is a party, and with organization comes power. I think that power is the power of the oppressed people.

After leaving social campaigns and joining politics, other things will be forgotten, right?

Even after winning various rights-related cases, rights were not obtained. There was a fundamental right in the constitution, but that right could not be properly utilized. After that, I felt that I was stateless. I joined the NCP in search of that state. I believe that everything including social campaigns can be done through politics. If you do not join politics, the state will trample you in a policy way. At that time, even if you and I, hardworking youth, jumped on the streets, nothing would happen, but people who did not struggle are now coming forward in politics. There is a compelling situation to join the party to stop them.
