There are only 99 days left until the elections. However, the police weapons looted during the Gen-G movement have not yet been returned. More than 4500 prisoners are on the run.

How is the police working to bring back the looted weapons and prisoners who escaped from prison? What is the police's plan for election security? On this issue, Kantipur Television's Kiran Poudel has an edited excerpt from a conversation with Nepal Police Spokesperson Avinarayan Kafle : A large number of Nepal Police weapons were looted during the Gen-G movement on Bhadra 23 and 24. There are not even a hundred days left for the election. At such a time, the looted weapons themselves are at risk of becoming a challenge to election security. What is the police doing about this?

Nepal Police has launched a campaign to bring back the lost weapons. Some weapons have been found buried in burnt and some in broken police offices. It is estimated that 35 to 40 percent of the weapons have yet to be 'recovered'. From the police headquarters to the provincial police office to the police post level, work is being done on this as a priority. In every district, committees are being formed to recover weapons.

It has been seen that escaped prisoners have committed criminal acts again. Are there any criminal incidents where weapons stolen from the police have been used?

It has been seen that escaped prisoners have been involved in everything from murder to robbery. But it has not been seen that weapons stolen from the police have been used.

Prisoners of heinous crimes are still on the run. There is still an atmosphere of fear in society, right?

Senior officer desks have been formed across the country to return escaped prisoners. In the current situation, work is being done on weapons recovery and arresting escaped prisoners as a top priority. A focal person at the level of Deputy Superintendent of Police in the province and a focal person at the level of senior officer in the district are being assigned to arrest escaped prisoners. A notice has been published in the newspaper regarding this. The list of absconding prisoners has been given up to the post level. Work is being done in collaboration and coordination with other security agencies. There is no need to panic. The police is committed to civil security.

More than 600 foreign prisoners and detainees are absconding. What is happening regarding the return of foreign prisoners?

In the case of foreign absconding, work is being done through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs to stop passports and prevent them from being issued new ones. International border checkpoints have also been tightened. Special surveillance has been carried out at air borders and work is being done in coordination with friendly countries.

What work is the police doing in election security? How is coordination being done with other security agencies?

The integrated security plan has been sent to the district level after being passed by the Central Security Committee. The District Security Committee is also working on planning in the district. Work is being done under the mandate given to the police under the Integrated Security Plan. Work is being done in coordination with other security agencies to conduct the election safely and securely, based on past experience. Since the election is common to all, work is also being done in collaboration to create an environment for everyone. The police are also doing special work in information collection.

How many security personnel will be deployed for the election?

The exact details will be known only after the polling station is designated. But the polling place is certain. The police are mobilized by classifying the polling station. Temporary police are also deployed.

How many temporary police officers do you think need to be recruited?

It is not certain at present. But looking at the current situation, it seems that 132,000 to 150,000 temporary police officers need to be recruited.

How many arrests were made related to the incidents that took place during the Gen-G movement? How many cases were registered?

So far, 580 people have been arrested. 278 cases have been registered. Especially, many cases have been registered for criminal harassment. Similarly, there are many arrests and cases for indecent behavior and theft.
