The Unified Socialist Party of Nepal (CPN) is on the verge of a split. After the Central Committee took a policy decision to unite with the Maoist Center on Friday, senior leaders Jhalanath Khanal, General Secretary Ghanshyam Bhusal and other leaders held a separate meeting on Saturday, expressing their disagreement.

A leader said that preparations are underway to form a 'NCP Unified Socialist (Bhusal) Group' under the coordination of General Secretary Bhusal. While the established faction led by Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal is preparing to unite with the Maoist Center, the Bhusal group has called a central committee meeting of its faction, saying that it will restructure the party. Kantipur's Ganga BC spoke to the leader of the dissident faction, Ram Kumari Jhankri . The party secretariat had decided to unite with the Maoists. How will your journey move forward after that decision? The central committee decided to unite with the Maoists. After that decision, we have come to the conclusion that our old journey is almost over. The purpose of reviewing the meeting and making a small action plan to move forward is to review the meeting. Therefore, we discussed the review and future steps in the meeting. The unity process with the Maoists has not been completed . Then we will move forward with political activities . Is it certain that you will not participate in the unity process ? Now there are two things . One is political and the other is legal . We are not against unity, but we have just decided not to participate in that process . We will not affect them, we will not interfere .  But we have also said this – many people's representatives of our party, from ward, province to national assembly level, who do not want to go for unity . Therefore, we have said that legally, do not force them by saying it is the party's decision, give them the right to make independent decisions . Now how will you move forward with the party's activities ? After unity, legally, we cannot use the name 'NCP (Unified Socialist)', but politically we can conduct our activities through flags and banners . Therefore, we will reorganize the ‘Unified Socialist’ using this banner. For election purposes, we have prepared to participate by forming the ‘Left Front’. Political activities will be conducted openly under this banner. But due to the electoral system and proportional representation, it is difficult to contest elections independently. That is why there is a talk of bringing the leftist forces together and coordinating them. A merger meeting between the central committees of the Maoists and the CPN-S is being held on the 17th. Only after that decision is made will we hold our meetings and proceed with the party reorganization.

It sounds like your group is preparing to merge with the UML, is this true?

Politics is a game of possibilities, there are always possibilities. But today there is no plan, program or decision that is compatible with the UML.

Why do you think the Samajwadi Party has not been successful?

We built the Socialist Party amidst widespread dissatisfaction in society and imbalance within the institutional party. The name was also good, the objective was also right. But due to the incompetence of our leadership, the party could not become strong, but rather went towards dissolution.

All responsibility was concentrated on one person. There were factions in the mass organization, the committees could not function. Looking at it today, it seems that Madhav Kumar Nepal did this as part of a plan to dissolve the party to the place he wanted.

Is it possible to collaborate with Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma, who is opposed to unity in the Maoists?

I want to tell him – this party is the result of our common revolution, it should not be abandoned. It is not good for the commander to surrender his warriors and leave the party. It is better to stay and fight there. The party he built by fighting should not be surrendered to opportunists. But when Madhav Nepal is dissolving the party, we should unite. The left movement must be revived.
