In the Nepali film industry, Rajesh Hamal's physical stature is not only high, but his acting, social role and gentleness are also high. But there are also comments that his acting is not multifaceted. That's why, recently he was busy with other activities apart from films.

But after 8 years, he is returning to acting again with the new film 'Narasimha' which is going to be screened on 9th of June. actor Rajesh Hamal Reena Moktan of Kantipur talks about three decades of acting journey, the pressure of technology on filmmakers, the government's efforts to tighten 'censorship', the growing trend of curtailing artists' expressions and social dissatisfaction.

You are returning to films after 8 years. Why not make a film in the meantime? Did it take time to dislike the script? 

 I was busy with other work during this 'gap'. I used to do social work. I was traveling within and outside the country. Conducting television programs, participating in cultural programs also kept me very busy. If I had lived 'ideal', I would have said that I should work in movies. The offers kept coming. However, no one was satisfied with the role, no one liked the team.

Then Diwakar Bhattaraiji came with the story of 'Narasimha'. I was not in the mood to do a movie as soon as we met. Filming means setting aside 40/45 days for shooting. When the final homework on my character was done, the plot and the role took off. First of all, the whole plot of the movie should be good. One should also understand how the character is built. After that I agreed to do the film.

After the results of 'Shakuntala', 'Mukhuta', which you did 8 years ago, were not good, it is also said that you stayed away from movies for some time?

is that too. In the past, I did not choose movies carefully. There was no choice at that time. The theme would be the same. Roles were also determined. That's why I kept doing films at one time. So when it came to the mask, I tried to make a film made with a new technology, but the result was not very good. Then I felt that I should take a 'break' and do it only if a good role comes my way. So it took 8 years to come back.

Now the film's promotional style has changed. A digital poster is posted on social media. Over time, poster pastes have faded from the profession. In this film of yours, it was inaugurated by making a huge poster on the wall. Does it mean anything now?  Unveiling a

poster has a different kind of charm. I have never seen such a big poster. At least it was a three-story poster. A large building had to be chosen when it was dropped from above. This is the biggest poster of my career. But now it is necessary to walk somewhere. In the past, the method of promotion was different. There was no social media, no internet. At that time, posters were stuck on the walls. There was a time when movie posters were plastered all over the city. Now don't stick the poster where you found it. At that time poster pasters were employed. After the poster went out of fashion, their profession disappeared. After that, another profession has been born – promoting movies on social media.

You are seen in many films as a character who raises voice against corruption, injustice and injustice. Looking at the trailer of the film which is coming after 8 years, it seems that he is still in the same character. You are poor in character, aren't you tired of fighting the battle of Nimukha yet? 

As long as this situation continues in the society, the fight will continue. Such characters keep coming. Even now, there are various political, economic and social challenges in our society. There is discontent among the masses. There is dissatisfaction in various professions. As long as there are problems in the society, the movie will also raise the same theme. 

In India, Amitabh Bachchan played character roles in films like 'Piku', 'Gulabo Sitabo' as he grew older. But you did not come in a different character. Why did you come back as a 'hero' even at this age? 

I don't think so. I am not at the age of Amitabh Bachchan (laughs). It is counter productive to find out why this is happening in such and such a place in the movie. Now the scope of creation here has widened. Different types of movies are being made. You can make films like 'Narasimha' on 'heroism' or on other topics. It is not fair to say that at such and such age, in such and such place, so and so did this. It will run in its own pattern.

In the past, when I was constantly filming, the scope of creation was limited. A movie should have been made based on some kind of theme. Where the hero-heroine should have looked better. It is now better here than in India. Now here, actors in different roles, films made on different topics are seen. The audience has also preferred movies that do not feature heroism. The audience has also seen the movie with heroism. 

In the last few decades, with the arrival of directors like Naveen Subba, Meen Bham, Deepak Rauniar, it has been seen that films can be made in a different direction, our stories can be told even without 'heroism'. The audience accepted such movies. A change came in the film industry that Dayahang Rai can also be a hero. How do you see this change? 

, firstly, the person playing the leading role in the first movie should be like this, the hero should be 'larger than life', the heroine should be like this. This was also the practice in neighboring countries. However, now the scope is widening which is good for creative people. The

person did not have to shrink from his creation. The audience also wants to see a better movie than such a theme, such an actor. If a good movie is made overall by picking up any theme, there is a possibility of making a movie of every genre. The most important thing is that the acceptance of the audience has increased in different tastes. They want to see a good movie more than any theme, any actor.  How has the audience's taste changed as the scope of

themes and artists has expanded?

In the beginning, the expectation of the audience was the same – as soon as heroism was called, the hero had to have a certain character. A lot of content submitted in a different format than that didn't work. Now the audience is also ready for different tastes. What kind of changes have you seen in the history of Nepali movies over 5 decades?  A change in

film is its technique. Camera, sound system has changed. By the time I started, the stakes had changed from 20 years ago. Change is happening at every stage. Now, the culture of watching movies has changed. 25/30 years ago, there was no internet, no mobile. Go and see the movie in the building itself. Now the movie is in hand, pocket. So the movie itself did not become a point of attraction.

Before going to the movies was a celebration. Now people make their own movies. You sit down and play background music. Now there are artists in every house. Grandchildren have been dancing and acting together since childhood. Earlier, only those who were active in this genre used to do this. Nowadays, if you go outside, you will see children dancing in pairs. I used to think, 30 years ago, me and Heroine used to sit down and do this. Now the old people who go for a walk are doing the same. That's why acting, watching movies, movie making was not a new topic. The challenge was that those in this business had to be better than them. It had to be more sophisticated and modified. Earlier we were allowed to make a little mess, now we don't have that.  It seems that there is a growing awareness among the filmmakers that

filmmakers should spend a long time on 'scripts', they should be slow. It sounds like they weren't that serious before?  Just because the

'script' is ready, it doesn't mean that it has to be Ramayana. If the location was not as we expected, it had to be modified. The amendment was yesterday and is still today. But the belief that the script is the strongest part was yesterday and still is today. A movie is not strong until the script is strong. Unfortunately, not all movies are made according to that script. Because a script is written by a pen, a film is written by a camera. Everyone writes a good story when they write with a pen.

Anyone writing a weak script, will you work on it? They don't come saying. All come with excellent stories. A story written by a pen is good. However, how the same thing is shown through the camera is important. In my experience, a good or bad movie depends on how the director knows how to tell the story through the camera. People come here to make documentaries, for example

. They capture the mountains and people's life here with very good technology. It looks amazing. Another person comes, he also captures the same mountain and life, but he may not like it. It's all about how a person creates through their technology, from the camera to the screen. Often it seems that good and bad movies are determined from there. With the development of

technology, there were many changes in the film industry. From analog to digital, it has now reached the age of AI. How should an artist adapt to these changes?  Since the

film is a technical aspect since its inception, as soon as the technology has improved, it has also developed in the content it has produced. The change is not just now. At every change, we see that the person is initially shocked and gradually embraces it and moves forward with ease. This is just the beginning of the tremendous leaps that AI and digital technologies have made now.

AI may create the possibility that real actors are not needed in films tomorrow. He can do as many people say. But, I think in time it will take the easy way out. Changed technology may also be helpful for artists. As time goes by, the people involved in it should be 'upgraded' to it.  In terms of

investment, movies are now made with a budget of over crores. The business also started to be worth crores. Purna Bahadur's sarangi showed a wide way to the domestic market, didn't it?

If you know that 50 crores will be raised, you can spend 10 crores. Here a movie is seen to have done a wide business, it made a good movie and the audience is there. But while making a movie, someone has sunk millions here. Therefore, the market has not yet given the condition to increase the production cost by looking at the most popular movies, there is a risk. 

In the meantime, you have hosted a television program called 'Jatko Prashan'. Did you protest while conducting a program on such a serious topic? 

, the topic we have raised, should continue to be a topic of discussion. Our society should be aware of these issues which have been going on for centuries. Although written into law, it is not going away overnight. It takes a long time to translate into practice. Therefore, by creating awareness, the aim is to end this type of malpractice. Such opposition does not have much effect on doing so. Because it exists in society, there should be such a debate. It does not magically disappear as soon as it is done. But it should continue to be a topic of discussion, as long as the problem persists. 

artists participate in this kind of sensitive issues through movies. Artists should be responsible for such sensitive issues in the society, they should speak. How many artists have kept silent about such matters? 

I conducted the program and interacted directly with the society to understand it closely. Not all artists have to do that. But, you have to be careful. An artist has another responsibility. Not everyone has to solve the problem by running the program and interacting. Artist, music workers can reflect even this way. A lot of the art has been submitted has helped to help change society.
