The University Grants Commission is going to provide the equivalence certificate given by Tribhuvan University to students who have studied higher education abroad from 1st Shrawan.

On Thursday, the Tribhuvan University Curriculum Development Center issued a notice stating that the equivalence determination work has been stopped. The center has stated that it will not accept applications related to equivalence determination from 1st Shrawan. The commission got this authority from the amendment made to the University Grants Commission Act 2050 in 2082 Shrawan through some Nepal Act amendments. The amendment has given the authority to the higher education regulatory body, the Commission, to transfer credits and quality assurance and accreditation (QAA) along with equivalence.

In the amendment, the point of ‘determining the equivalence of academic degrees awarded by foreign universities or similar educational institutions’ has been added to the functions, duties and powers of the commission. The commission has stated that it has already prepared for equivalence. Even if one completes studies from other universities in Nepal, it is mandatory to obtain equivalence from Tribhuvan University. Based on the government decision, the Curriculum Development Center under the Rector's Office of TU had been working to provide equivalence to domestic degrees as well as foreign degrees. In the report of the Higher Education Commission 2075, experts had recommended that the work of equivalence that TU had been doing should be given to the commission.

The center has stated that the work of determining the equivalence of higher education degrees will be done by the University Grants Commission from 1 Shrawan 2083 as per the amendment to the University Grants Commission Act 2050. After the amendment to the act, the commission has also received clear legal recognition to carry out credit transfer and QAA work. Although the commission had done these works earlier, there was no clear legal basis. The commission's work, duties and powers to make necessary arrangements regarding credit transfer between universities and QAA of the university have been added to the commission's work, duties and powers. After being relieved of his post by the ordinance, the commission has been without a chairman and member secretary for 3 months.
