The Ministry of Education and Sports has stated that 218 people have applied to become the vice-chancellors of 8 different universities.
The government had called for online applications on 25 Baisakh for the posts of vice-chancellors of Tribhuvan University, Purbanchal, Pokhara, Lumbini Buddhist, Agriculture and Forestry, Midwestern, Farwestern and Rajarshi Janak Universities. The Ministry of Education and Sports has stated that 218 people have applied for it. It has been arranged that one person can apply for the vice-chancellorship of a maximum of two universities. ‘Some have applied for both.’ We are verifying the applications. After verification, the application will be approved and the shortlist will be made public,’ said a source close to the Vice-Chancellor Selection and Recommendation Committee.
The committee had issued the procedure for selecting the vice-chancellors during the application process. In which it is stated that a shortlist will be prepared after evaluating personal details on 35 integers. Out of the total 100 marks, the remaining 65 marks are mentioned in the procedure for recommending candidates on the basis of merit by taking the candidate's university-related thought paper, action plan, its presentation and interview. The recommendation committee formed under the leadership of Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel includes Education Secretary Chudamani Poudel and National Planning Commission education member Resu Aryal Dhungana. The recommendation committee has appointed experts to evaluate the thought papers, action plans and interview the applications.
After the government revoked the appointments of about 1,500 people appointed by the previous government through an ordinance, all universities have vacant positions including vice-chancellors. Chancellor and Prime Minister Balendra Shah has given the dean and senior-most professors the responsibility of acting in the vacant positions. Sushil Bajracharya, Dean of the Engineering Chair Institute of Tribhuvan University, has been designated as the acting vice-chancellor. Dean of the Faculty of Management, Mahananda Chalise, has been appointed as the registrar and Dean of the Faculty of Science, Shankar Khanal, has been appointed as the rector. As the deans of Kathmandu University have also been relieved of their posts, Controller of Examinations, Hrishikesh Wagle, has been appointed as the acting dean. Wagle has given the deans of all the seven schools who were relieved of their posts back as deans.
