Private school organizations have pledged to provide free education to children affected by the removal of squatter settlements.

Apen, N-PABSON, HISAN and PABSON issued a joint statement on Sunday, stating that they will arrange for free education in private schools in the areas to ensure the continuity of education for children from affected and actual squatter families living on various river banks in the Valley and in various vulnerable places in the country.

'We are ready to provide necessary support and facilitation to ensure the continuity of education of children from affected and actual squatter families in coordination with the local level and relevant bodies,' the statement said. 'We request all the concerned organizations to be ready to systematically and effectively implement supportive measures such as providing free education to children from affected areas in private schools in the areas, managing housing and transportation as per the need.'

As the government campaign to remove squatter settlements in various parts of the country, including the Valley, is intensifying, the organizations have drawn attention to the fact that the education of the affected children should not be affected. "It is the shared responsibility of the state, society and the education sector to ensure that the fundamental right of children to basic education, guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal, is not violated under any circumstances, while being aware of the obstacles faced by children from affected communities in their education," the statement said.
