In Nepal, 56 colleges affiliated with foreign schools are providing higher education to Nepali students.
According to the list made public by the Ministry of Education, the largest number of colleges affiliated with British universities are operating in Nepal, with 28. This is followed by a large number of colleges affiliated with Malaysian universities.
According to the data made public by the Ministry of Education on Monday, there are 20 colleges affiliated with Malaysian universities. 2/2 colleges affiliated with universities in America, Thailand and India are operating. Similarly, 1/1 college affiliated with universities in Australia and Switzerland is operating.
According to the ministry, most of these colleges are operating in the Kathmandu Valley. At the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, foreign-affiliated colleges have been running educational programs in faculties and subjects such as management, science and technology, computer science, information technology, humanities, cyber security, business administration, network engineering, mobile application development, data science, data analysis, software engineering, hospitality management, human resource management, fashion design, etc. The Ministry of
has made public the details of educational institutions permitted to run higher education programs in relation to foreign educational institutions. This includes the universities granting affiliation, colleges operated and permitted subjects and programs. Colleges have been established and operated on the basis of the Directive on Operating Higher Education in Relation to Foreign Educational Institutions, 2059. The Directive has prescribed provisions related to the establishment, operation, monitoring, fees, and regulation of colleges. The directive states that only universities within the top 1,000 in the world rankings of Times Higher Education and Shanghai Jiaotong are allowed to operate educational programs in Nepal.
In 2056, the Ministry of Education decided to regulate educational institutions opened under foreign affiliation for the first time. Colleges had already opened before that. The directive was issued three years later in 2059.
A-level and similar foreign programs have also been operating in Nepal. Former Education Ministers Sumana Shrestha and Vidya Bhattarai had formed a task force comprising experts on the operation of colleges under foreign affiliation and studied various topics. The study report has not been implemented.
