Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the politicization of higher education has affected the academic environment of the university. She said this while speaking at the 31st convocation ceremony of Kathmandu University.
Speaking on the issue of politicization in higher education, she said, “Unnecessary party interference in educational administration has continuously affected Nepal’s higher education sector.” She also said that the government has taken some concrete steps in understanding this.
Stating that the government is working to change the system of the Prime Minister being the Chancellor of the university, she informed that the Education Minister is consulting with stakeholders on this issue. Stating that efforts are being made to establish a system of an academician being the Chancellor by amending the Act, she said, “Such a system will reduce political interference in the university.”
She said that the government will also take the initiative in providing visas to foreign students easily.
Addressing the students who were convocation at the convocation ceremony, she said, “This country is ours. No one will come and build it.” Stating that she did not have much assurance to give to the students, she mentioned that all students should work to make the nation prosperous.
