It has been a month since students began a sit-in at the Central Technical Campus, Hattisar, in Dharan, demanding academic and administrative reforms.
Under the leadership of Swavi University President Peshal Raj Karki, they have been sitting on a one-hour sit-in at the main gate of the campus since 10 am every day. The students had started the agitation since October 17, saying that their future is in danger due to mismanagement, poor academic environment and lack of transparency on the campus.
According to President Karki, students are being affected due to irregularities in faculty registration, academic quality, financial transparency, campus management and health insurance, which is why they have been forced to protest.
They say that the future of the students is in doubt as the B.Sc. Microbiology and B.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics faculties, which have been operating on the campus for years, have not been registered with the Nepal Health Professional Council yet.
The agitators allege that the Nutrition and Dietetics faculty, which has been operating under TU since 2067 BS, has not been recognized by the council even after 15 years, causing students to miss out on license exams, government jobs and other professional opportunities. They demand that these faculties be registered with the Nepal Health Professional Council.
Similarly, the students say that no service facility has been provided regarding the fee of Rs. 500 taken from the students in the name of health insurance and that the amount should be returned unconditionally as it is not clear where and how the facility is available in the form of insurance. President Karki said that they had to launch the protest after the campus ignored them despite raising their voice on this issue for years. He has warned that the protest will be intensified if the demand is not met.
Campus Head Professor Basanta Kumar Rai said that the demand raised by the students is in the interest of the campus but he has not come to the dialogue despite repeated invitations. ‘We have said that we will fulfill the demands we can. Even if the campus's irregularities change, we are committed to improving and managing the campus,’ he said.
