Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has said that the current system of the university chancellor being the Prime Minister should be ended.

At a press conference held at the ministry on Monday, Minister Pun pointed out the need to completely remove political influence to improve the university and said, 'If we want to make the university better, politicization must be eliminated. This should start by removing the system of the Prime Minister being the Chancellor.'

He said that a 'board of trustees' should be formed to develop a fair system in the university and a system should be established for the selection of the Chancellor by the same board. Stating that a law amendment is necessary for that, he said that currently there is neither a situation in which the law can be amended nor an ordinance can be brought. He said, 'A preliminary draft is being prepared to remove politicization.'

He also said that after complaints increased that universities were not releasing exam results on time, all universities have been instructed to publish results on time. 'It has been decided to stop the grant of universities that do not publish results on time,' he said.

Minister Pun also informed that work has been taken forward to investigate the issue of non-payment of salaries and allowances of school teachers, improve the process of selecting principals and revise the curriculum.
