The meeting of the Medical Education Commission has formed a working group to review the number of seats and fees for student admission in medical colleges.

The 18th meeting of the Commission was held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Commission Chairman KP Sharma Oli. According to the Prime Minister's Secretariat, the meeting formed an 11-member task force to review the number of seats and fee structure of MBBS and BDS in private medical colleges. A working group has been formed under the coordination of Education Secretary Deepak Kafle to submit opinions and suggestions within 10 days.

The 17th meeting of the commission had decided to give subsistence allowance to resident doctors who are pursuing postgraduate (PG) in medical education. Dissatisfied with that decision, private medical colleges have decided not to teach PG. According to the decision, resident doctors are protesting that they should get 48,000 per month subsistence allowance. Resident doctors of most of the medical colleges have been protesting by boycotting services.

The owners of private medical colleges have been demanding that the government should ensure financial resources to provide subsistence allowance. Sources of the commission said that the task force was formed with the aim of increasing the MBBS seats and increasing the fees as per the demand of the medical college. Private medical college operators have been saying that they can increase the number of seats that can admit foreign students. Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population in the

Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges drew attention to the difficulty of providing subsistence allowance to residential doctors as per the government and Prime Minister Oli called a meeting saying that the students would protest again if they did not get the allowance. 

The commission claims that the private medical college will be given the subsistence allowance specified by the commission and the matching process of the students will be started after the study is conducted to increase the number of seats and fees. Due to the fee dispute, the process of student matching after the result of the entrance exam has also been blocked. It is said that the next meeting of the commission will be held on May 15 with the report of the working group.
