Attempted arson at Mahendra Morang campus due to SWIU elections

There has been a clash between two groups of Nepal Students' Association over the issue of SWIU elections in Mahendra Morang Campus Biratnagar. Some student leaders close to Congress leader Shekhar Koirala election officer Dr. Sushil Kumar Adhikari was locked inside the office of the election committee and tried to set it on fire.

On Wednesday afternoon, the student leader of the Koirala group locked the officer in a room and tried to set it on fire after locking it from outside. After a while, the police team broke the lock and rescued the officer safely. The police have arrested Yograj Dahal, Pooja Biswas, district secretary Guddu Sah and Ayush Dahal, central members of the Navy Sangh, for their involvement in the incident. It is said that they are being investigated by keeping them at the Morang District Police Office.

The dispute of officiality between the two factions of the Congress-related New Union for the election of SWIU in the Mahendra Morang campus has heated up . Party Chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba and Dr. The Shekhar Koirala group had filed separate nominations. The Koirala side was dissatisfied when the election committee considered the Deuba side group official as per the instructions of the centre. The dispute over the Swabiyu elections has taken a violent form before.

On February 15th, the founding faction of the Navy attacked the student leader of the Shekhar group with weapons. Campus Swaviyu President Jaswant Paudel, Secretary Sanim Thakuri and others attacked Naval Union Morang President Saroj Pokharel with an ax and Guddu Sah, Pooja Biswas, Prashant Yadav, Suviksha Thapa Magar and others were injured.

According to the students of the campus, the dispute between the student leaders has intensified due to differences between the two Congress leaders, former Chief Minister Kedar Karki and Congress Morang Vice President Nagesh Koirala.

Tribhuvan University has scheduled the Swaviyu election on the 5th of Chait. Keeping in view the growing tension between the student organizations, the campus administration has promised to arrange the necessary security arrangements . 19 groups are competing in the campus with 5,500 voters.

Meanwhile, All-Revolutionaries close to CPN (Maoist Center) have strongly condemned the incident. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Rohit Yadav, president of the campus unit of Krantikari, called the incident "illegal and reprehensible" and demanded to ensure peaceful elections in the campus.
