Kathmandu University is going to start Data Science (BDSC) at the undergraduate level for the first time in Nepal. The Department of Mathematics under the School of Science of the University has announced that it will start teaching the four-year BDSC from the next academic session.

Recently in the field of information technology  According to the university, the study/teaching of BDSC is going to be started to produce the skilled manpower required with the rapid development. BDSC students fill the shortage of skilled manpower in the field of information technology through the intensive study of mathematics. Rabindra Kayastha said.

is a 120 credit hour BDSC integrated course in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics and Business Intelligence. In this context, the first two years are taught about coding, graphics, systems, networks and databases, which are necessary for computing.

It is said that students who have scored at least 2.0 CGPA or 50 percent marks in class 12 or similar exams can get admission in BDSC. The university has said that it will enroll a maximum of 30 students in an academic session and will award scholarships to three students based on the marks obtained in the entrance examination. In addition, Professor Kayastha said that one person will get a scholarship based on merit in each semester.  Kayasth said that students who pass BDSC can work as data engineers, data architects, data analysts, and data scientists in technology companies. Similarly, he said, students can also work in machine learning, software development and other fields. "In the digital era, data is a very valuable asset," said Professor Kayasth, "After studying BDSC, the student becomes clear about what data is and its need, importance and use."

The Department of Mathematics of the University is currently conducting technology-friendly four-year Computational Mathematics as well as MSc, MPhil, PhD in Mathematics and Statistics.
