Major music industry organizations worldwide have launched a new voluntary labeling system to identify music content created using artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to provide listeners with clear information about AI-generated content.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), together with the Grammy Awards organizers and other organizations, unveiled the system on Friday.

In a joint statement issued by the organizations, it was noted that listeners want to know how and to what extent AI has been used in music creation, and it is believed that the new label will help maintain transparency.

Under the new system, two types of labels will be used. The first, “AI-generated,” will be applied to content where most or all creative aspects of the song or recording have been produced by artificial intelligence. This includes songs fully generated by AI, as well as main vocals or primary instrumental tracks created by AI.

The second, “AI-assisted,” will be used for music that is primarily based on human creation but has incorporated AI in some creative aspects. For such content, the main vocals and primary instrumental performances must be performed by human artists.

This voluntary labeling system is intended to be implemented globally, including on music streaming services. Streaming service Deezer has already introduced a system to automatically tag AI-generated content.

According to the company, currently about half of newly uploaded content is generated by AI. In June, Deezer also launched a system capable of identifying AI music with 99.8 percent accuracy.

Earlier this year, an Apple Music executive stated that more than one-third of newly uploaded content is fully generated by AI.

The Digital Media Association (DiMA), which represents streaming services such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Spotify, has also welcomed the new labeling system and announced that AI-related metadata will be further strengthened to provide users with more transparent information.

In April, Spotify introduced the “Spotify Certified” label to identify artists’ official content and announced new measures to prevent AI impersonation.
