A man has been safely rescued after eight days trapped under the rubble of a building that collapsed after two powerful earthquakes in Venezuela. The man has been identified as Hernan Gil. Rescuers have pulled him out safely after more than 100 hours of searching under 140 tons of rubble. The death toll from the earthquake in Venezuela has risen to 2,595 as of Thursday evening, with thousands still missing. Gil was working in a small concrete shelter in the basement of a parking lot when the quake struck. Rescuers say the shelter protected him from the 140 tons of rubble that fell on him. Costa Rican Red Cross paramedic Alan Madrigal said the rescue operation was intensified on Sunday after he heard Gil's small voice coming from under the rubble. Rescue teams from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal and the United States then jointly launched the rescue operation. Gil was provided with water and saline during the rescue. The rescue operation was further complicated by repeated collapses of the access roads to reach him. After an all-night effort, the rescue team established direct contact with him. Video taken before the rescue showed Gil wearing a face mask and goggles to protect his eyes. Rescuers provided him with these items to protect him from dust and debris.

Mexican Red Cross officials involved in the rescue said Gil was in good health and was in constant communication with rescuers throughout the rescue.
