The first round of talks between Iran and the US aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East concluded on Monday in the Swiss resort of Bergenstock.
Both sides have agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within the next 60 days and have decided to continue technical-level talks.
According to a joint statement issued after the talks brokered by Pakistan and Qatar, a high-level committee formed by Tehran and Washington has set an action plan for the final agreement. It is said that further discussions will be held in Bergenstock this week on the remaining technical issues.
During the talks, it was also agreed to establish a conflict management mechanism with the participation of the US, Iran, the Lebanese government and a mediator to ensure the implementation of the end of military activities in Lebanon. Similarly, both sides have established a special 'communication line' to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships through the 'Strait of Hormuz' and to avoid possible mutual confusion and incidents. This arrangement will remain in effect for the 60-day period mentioned in the initial agreement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi claimed on social media that sanctions on oil and petrochemical exports have been lifted, some frozen assets have been released, and reconstruction and development programs have been launched. However, the Pakistan-Qatar joint statement made no mention of the release of Iranian assets.
The previously signed agreement states that the US has committed to lifting all sanctions on Iran and making frozen or restricted funds and assets available for use. However, the White House did not immediately respond to Araghchi's claim.
With the success of the talks, Pakistan and Qatar have played an important international role as mediators. In the joint statement, both countries expressed their commitment to continue supporting the talks in a constructive atmosphere until a final agreement is reached.
