The US has launched a military strike on Iran in retaliation for Iran shooting down a US helicopter.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strike on Iran was launched in response to the helicopter shooting down on Wednesday morning. CENTCOM said in a statement, “This is a proportionate response to Iran’s unjustified aggression.” Explosions were also heard in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

The two crew members of the downed US Apache helicopter were rescued by a US naval drone. The US military has confirmed that a naval drone was used in the rescue operation.

After the helicopter was shot down, US President Donald Trump wrote on his social media account Truth Social, “Both pilots are safe and unharmed. However, the US must respond to this attack.”

According to US officials, the attack was carried out by an Iranian drone. However, it is not clear whether the drone deliberately targeted the helicopter.

Iran has not claimed responsibility for the downing of the helicopter, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency, although Iranian media outlets have indicated they will admit responsibility.

Hours after the incident, Centcom confirmed a military strike inside Iran, calling it a “proportionate response to Iranian aggression.”

The attack was primarily aimed at Iranian defense and radar systems, according to the US news website Axios. Iranian state media reported that explosions were heard in the Persian Gulf, including in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm and Sirik.

US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson said he was present when Trump decided to resume strikes on Iran.

He said, “It is sad that this has become necessary, but we must resolve this issue.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of a strong response to the US move. He wrote in X, “Iran will not leave any attack or threat unanswered.”

Araghchi added, “If you want to be safe, leave our territory.”
