Kuwait International Airport was temporarily suspended after an Iranian drone attack on Wednesday, amid rising military tensions between Iran and the United States. Kuwait said several people were injured and the airport's infrastructure was severely damaged.
Kuwait's Defense Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said "several hostile drones" had targeted the airport's passenger terminal. The attack caused extensive damage to the terminal and several people were injured. The airport, which had been temporarily closed due to the war with Iran, only reopened on June 1.
The attack came as Iran and the United States have been exchanging missiles and drone strikes in recent days. The US military said on Tuesday night that it had struck Iranian military facilities in response to Iranian missile attacks in Kuwait and Bahrain. According to the US side, two missiles launched towards Kuwait were destroyed in mid-flight, while missiles aimed at Bahrain were intercepted.
US Central Command said that several drones targeting US forces in Kuwait had been shot down. Similarly, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have targeted US military presence in Bahrain and other areas, although Kuwait was not directly mentioned.
The Iranian side said that these actions were taken in response to the alleged attack on an oil tanker during the US blockade. The statement issued by the Guard said that although it had previously warned, it would respond strongly if an attack occurred.
Meanwhile, US Central Command said that it had retaliated against an Iranian military communications and control center near the Strait of Hormuz. As both sides continued to attack each other, regional tensions have been further heightened.
Iranian news agencies have since claimed that the ongoing talks with the mediators have been suspended, but US President Donald Trump has denied the claim and said that the talks are continuing. He said on social media that the talks with Iran are progressing at various stages and the final outcome is still uncertain.
According to an official involved in regional mediation, Iran had recently given a clear signal that it would not move forward with the talks until a ceasefire is implemented in Lebanon. But it is said that no official announcement of a postponement has been made.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement to Congress, expressed optimism about the nuclear aspect of the talks, but made it clear that there is no guarantee of a concrete agreement.
The latest attack on Kuwait airport has raised concerns that the ongoing military tensions in the Middle East could further spiral out of control. This has created additional pressure on civilian infrastructure and international flight safety.
