The Ukraine war has reached NATO member Romania. Two people were injured when a drone linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine crashed into a residential building in eastern Romania. Romania has asked NATO to provide additional anti-drone protection capabilities.
The drone was tracked by radar in the country's airspace. The drone then crashed into the roof of an apartment building in the eastern city of Galati, causing a fire. Two people were slightly injured in the incident, and several residents of the building have been evacuated.
The city of Galati, located on the Danube River, is close to the Moldovan and Ukrainian borders. Police, emergency services and other agencies were immediately mobilized after the incident. The Romanian military has authorized the deployment of two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter, and has sent an alert message to local residents.
Romania's foreign ministry called the incident a serious violation of international law. The ministry also called on NATO to strengthen the alliance's air defenses and expedite the delivery of anti-drone systems.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the incident showed "Russia's war has crossed another line." She said the Russian drone had crashed in a densely populated area of European territory, injuring civilians, and that the European Union (EU) was preparing to strengthen its eastern border security and a new sanctions package against Russia.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was increasing pressure on the United States to provide his country with more Patriot air defense systems. Speaking to reporters during a visit to Sweden, he warned that supplies needed by Ukraine were dwindling dangerously as U.S. arms reserves were being diverted due to regional tensions with Iran.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also warned the Security Council that the war risks spiraling out of control. He said more civilians have been killed in the first four months of this year than in the same period in the previous three years. He called for an immediate de-escalation, increased diplomatic efforts and a complete and unconditional ceasefire.
