The death toll from a new Ebola outbreak in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 80, the Congolese health ministry has announced.

Congolese Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said in a statement that special laboratory tests had confirmed eight initial cases of the Ebola virus late last week. The infections were detected in the health zones of Rwampara, Mongwalu and Bunia, and health officials said they were currently monitoring at least 246 suspected cases.

In response to the outbreak, the Congolese government has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Center to help contain the spread of the virus. It said it has also expanded decentralized diagnostic testing, strengthened epidemiological surveillance and deployed rapid response teams to affected areas.

The move comes after the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) officially classified the outbreak in the northeastern Ituri province as an active regional health emergency.
