US President Donald Trump has claimed that the two countries have reached a "great trade deal" after a high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump described the visit as "very successful" after the summit between the world's two largest economies focused on trade, technology, aviation and international security.
Trump said that important trade agreements were reached that would benefit both countries after the final round of talks at the superpower summit in Beijing. Walking with Xi in the gardens of Zhongnanhai, China's central leadership complex near the Forbidden City, he said that "very good trade deals were made for both countries."
Trump visited Beijing with the aim of expanding cooperation in areas including agriculture, aviation, energy and artificial intelligence. It is also said that efforts to maintain dialogue on issues ranging from the tense situation in the Middle East to global strategic differences are also on the main agenda of the visit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping described the visit as a "milestone" and stressed the need for the two countries to build a "new relationship based on constructive strategic stability." He expressed confidence that cooperation would continue to make the relationship more balanced and stable in the future.
Xi also promised US President Trump to send Chinese flower seeds for the White House Rose Garden. This is seen as a symbolic initiative to make the personal relationship between the two leaders friendly.
In an interview with Fox News after the first day of the summit, Trump said that Xi Jinping was positive about many of the US side's priorities. According to him, China has agreed to buy "200 large jets" from the US company Boeing. However, formal details about this have not been made public.
Trump said that China has also shown interest in buying US oil and soybeans. In recent years, China has been reducing its purchases of American agricultural products due to trade tariffs and bilateral tensions and has turned to Brazil. The US side has stated that the situation in the Middle East was also discussed during the meeting. According to Trump, Xi Jinping had made it clear that China has no plans to provide military assistance to Iran. He also mentioned that China is in favor of keeping the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered very important for world trade, open.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry pointed out the need for a ‘comprehensive and lasting ceasefire’ and said that international shipping routes should be returned to normal as soon as possible.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said that Trump and Xi also discussed the creation of a common ‘guardrail’, i.e. regulatory boundary, for the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). He said that it was important to start a dialogue between the world’s ‘two AI superpowers’.
However, it has been analyzed that the dispute over US export controls on advanced technology and Chinese technology access still remains a sensitive issue.
