Fourteen people are missing after a boat carrying 37 undocumented Indonesian migrants capsized off the western coast of Malaysia, officials said.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Perak said on Monday that a rescue operation was launched after a local fisherman reported finding survivors floating in the sea.
Initial investigations showed that 23 of the 37 people on board had been rescued. Efforts to locate the rest were ongoing.
Perak MMEA director Mohd Shukri Khotob said in a statement Initial investigations indicated that the migrants set off from Kisaran, Indonesia, on May 9 to other destinations in Malaysia, including Penang, Terengganu, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
The agency has deployed boats, helicopters and planes to search for the missing people. The rescued people have been handed over to police for further investigation, it said.
Malaysia is a major destination for millions of migrants from poorer parts of Asia, many of whom are undocumented and work in industries including construction and agriculture.
However, the border crossings, which have become a haven for human trafficking, are often dangerous and have led to boats sinking.
Earlier In November 2025, 36 migrants died when a boat carrying irregular migrants capsized near the Thai-Malaysian coast.
