Agency: North Korea has amended its constitution. According to which, if a foreigner assassinates Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, nuclear weapons will be used as a response.

The first session of the 15th Supreme People's Assembly, which began in the capital Pyongyang on March 22, approved the proposal. However, North Korea has kept this information to a limited number of people. On Thursday, South Korea's National Investigation Service (NIS) revealed this issue in a briefing with senior government officials.

According to the NIS, Kim himself commands North Korea's nuclear forces. However, if he is captured or killed by a foreigner, the forces will launch a nuclear attack.

Citing the revised Article 3 of the Nuclear Law, the NIS said, ‘If the command and control system of the country’s nuclear forces is threatened by an enemy attack, a nuclear attack will be carried out immediately.’

Andrei Lankov, a professor of international relations and history at Kokumin University in Seoul, said, ‘Such a policy could have been in the past.’ But now, the issue has been given more priority by including it in the constitution.’ He added, ‘North Korea took the Iranian incident as a warning.’ North Korea has become alert after Ali Khamenei was assassinated in a US-Israeli attack on February 28.

North Korea’s closed border has been tightened. Only a few foreign diplomats, businessmen and employees of social service organizations from friendly countries are allowed inside. They too must work under strict surveillance.
