The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has urged local residents not to panic about a cruise ship infected with the ‘Hantavirus’ that is heading to the Canary Islands in Spain. He has clarified that the current situation is “not like another corona pandemic” and said that the public health risk is currently low.

The MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged ship, is carrying more than 140 passengers and crew members. The ship is expected to arrive in Tenerife, one of Spain’s Canary Islands group, off the coast of West Africa, on Sunday morning.

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros, Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska are preparing to arrive in Tenerife on Saturday to coordinate the safe evacuation of passengers and crew from the ship.

Addressing local residents, Tedros said it was natural for people to be concerned as the pain of the previous corona epidemic was still fresh . But he stressed that the current hantavirus situation is not like the corona pandemic and that the risk is under control .

According to the World Health Organization, Spanish authorities and the ship's operating company, no one on board has shown symptoms of the virus . Relevant agencies are continuously monitoring the health of passengers .

Hantavirus is a virus that is usually transmitted by rats and other rodents . Infection with it can cause serious health problems, including fever, fatigue, and breathing problems . However, experts have said that the current situation is manageable .
