At least eight people have died in a fire at the Arghavan shopping center in the city of Andisheh, about 30 kilometers west of the Iranian capital Tehran.

Iran's state-run IRIB television reported that 40 people were injured in the fire that broke out on Tuesday. The building is home to more than 250 businesses.

Ali Paydar, head of the Andisheh fire department, said the fire spread quickly due to the mixed materials used in the facade of the building, the Iranian Students' Union (ISNA) reported.

ISNA quoted the Iranian Red Crescent Society as saying that search and rescue teams with trained dogs were at the scene.

IRIB said authorities were investigating the cause of the fire.
