Counting of votes for the assembly elections held in four states and the union territory of Puducherry in April is underway. According to the counting that began on Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in West Bengal and Assam, the BJP-led NDA alliance in Puducherry and the Congress-led UDF alliance in Kerala.
But the most interesting results are in the state of Tamil Nadu. Here, Vijay Thalapathy's Tamilaga Vetri Kajangam (TVK), who entered politics through acting, is leading in at least 105 of the 234 assembly seats. The two traditional forces, the Dravidian Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravidian Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), are in second and third place respectively. DMK is leading in about 50 and AIADMK in about 40 constituencies.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin has been defeated by TVK candidate VS Babu in the Kolathur constituency.
The slogan 'Victory will come' was given in the election campaign. Which the old parties considered normal. But the result came like this.
51-year-old Vijay's full name is Chandrasekhar Joseph Vijay. Fans call him Vijay Thalapathy. Thalapathy means commander or leader in Tamil.
Vijay's father SA Chandrasekhar is a film director and his mother Sahitri Shobha is a singer. He started his film journey as a child artist in 1984 with the film 'Vethri' directed by his own father.
He made his debut as a lead actor in the home production ‘Nalaiya Theerpu’ directed by his father in 1992. Although the film was a failure, it was an important learning experience for him.
He was popular in the late 1990s for his roles in romantic films in South India. The success of the action film Ghilli, which was released in 2004, significantly increased his stature in the Tamil film industry.
He has since acted in blockbuster films like Pokkiri (2007), Thuppakki (2012), Thalakaththi (2015), Martial (2027) and Leo (2023). Vijay, who has acted in more than 70 films in his career, announced his entry into active politics on 2 February 2024. He had announced his retirement from the film industry on 27 December last year.
He had said that he could not pay enough attention to the film industry due to increasing political activities. His latest film, 'Jana Nayagan', is yet to be released.
Vijay, who has been involved in social campaigns for a long time, has had a short political career with ups and downs. In September last year, 41 people, including 11 children, were killed in a stampede at a rally organized by his party in Karur. He was widely criticized after leaving the venue after the stampede.
Critics questioned his leadership style, saying that his militant nature was limited to the cinema screen. Last February, his wife initiated divorce proceedings, alleging abuse and cheating. Despite such personal questions and controversies, Vijay continued his political activities. He was busy strengthening the party's organizational structure and using his star image to woo voters.
‘Our leader cannot be compared to anyone other than superstar Rajinikanth,’ TVK general secretary KG Arunraj had told The Hindu some time ago, ‘He left the cinema industry at the height of his career and decided to serve the people. That is why people have faith in him.’
Vijay, in his party TVK’s manifesto, has termed the BJP as an ‘ideological enemy’ and the DMK as a ‘political enemy’. During his election campaign, he had called DMK leader and Chief Minister MK Stalin ‘uncle’. He claimed that the DMK and AIADMK could not represent the sentiments of the younger generation.
TVK had raised the issues of youth, women and the fishing community in this election. The announcement of the minimum support price (MSP) for the first time for eight selected types of fish, relief during fishing bans, subsidized diesel, insurance coverage and housing support were popular slogans mentioned in his manifesto. The party's manifesto also mentioned the provision of collateral-free loans of Rs 25 lakh to students studying from class 12 to PhD.
Women-friendly schemes include provisions such as free 6 LPG cylinders per year for each family, monthly distribution of Rs 2500 and distribution of 8 grams of gold under the marriage assistance scheme.
Vijay's rise has brought a break in the hegemony of the two Dravidian parties DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. Before the start of Dravidian politics, Tamil Nadu (then Madras State) was ruled by the Congress from 1947 to 1967. After the start of Dravidian politics (1988–1989), except for a short period, one of the DMK and AIADMK formed the government here for the rest of the time.
