Singapore and the International Atomic Energy Agency have signed the fourth agreement on a new cooperation framework for 2026-2031. The agreement prioritizes the use of nuclear technology and the efficient use of resources, identifying areas that are essential to achieving national development goals. In particular, it identifies six priority areas, including nuclear and radiation safety, environmental protection, food security, human health, energy and industrial applications. The new framework aims to enhance Singapore's capacity. It plans to develop capacity to assess the suitability of new energy technologies, strengthen environmental radiation monitoring, improve the quality of food testing, and enhance the safety and effectiveness of cancer treatment and nuclear imaging technologies. The framework also aims to strengthen nuclear safety capabilities as Singapore studies the potential uses of nuclear energy in the future. The framework also takes into account the growing interest in nuclear energy at the regional level. Singapore became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1967.
