US President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran. He also said that the US military will stop planned attacks to give Tehran more time to come up with a proposal to end the war. Trump himself said that this was announced at the request of Pakistan. The previous two-week ceasefire with Iran was due to end on Wednesday (today). Before that, Trump unilaterally extended the ceasefire on Tuesday night. He did not specify the time limit for the extended ceasefire. However, he said that it would continue until the talks are concluded. “Therefore, I have instructed our military to continue the blockade and I have asked all other parties to be ready and able,” he said in a social media post. “Therefore, I will continue the ceasefire until their proposal is presented and the discussions reach some conclusion.” Iran has not yet commented on this. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said that Tehran’s position on the ceasefire would be formally made public later.

Trump has abruptly backed down from his earlier statement on the ceasefire. An hour before announcing the extension, he had tweeted that he would not extend the ceasefire and that a major attack on Iranian infrastructure was imminent.

Iran, meanwhile, has refused to participate in the second round of talks scheduled to be held in Pakistan, protesting the US blockade of its ports.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif welcomed Trump's announcement to extend the ceasefire and said that efforts to reach an agreement to end the war would continue.
