Iran announced on Friday that it would open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping during the ceasefire period. Iran agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz after Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day ceasefire on Friday.

The United States has said that the 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon could be extended even further. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed hope that it will create an opportunity for a “historic agreement” with Lebanon. Iran-backed Hezbollah has also said that it will abide by the ceasefire. The militant group has also demanded that the agreement be reached on the condition that attacks on Lebanese soil cease and that Israeli troops stop moving there.

Trump, briefly commenting on the war at a Tax Day debate in Nevada, said, “It has to end very quickly.” He did not elaborate, saying that the war was going well. Trump also praised the role of US troops in the war.

Talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad over the weekend failed. However, mediators including Pakistan are pushing for a second round of talks. The White House has said that discussions are ongoing about a possible second round of peace talks, but that the date and venue have not been set, but that the possibility of talks has increased.

Iranian Foreign Minister Saeed Abbas Araghchi wrote in a post on social media, “In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage through the Strait of Hormuz has been fully opened for all commercial vessels for the remainder of the US-Iran ceasefire.”

It was not clear from his post whether he was referring to the 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel that took effect at midnight or the two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States that began on April 8.

US President Donald Trump has welcomed Iran’s announcement to open the crucial Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels.

Moscow has backed a ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon reached on Friday, saying it hopes the 10-day truce will pave the way for a long-term deal.

Leaders from world powers including France, Britain, India, China and the US have also expressed their support for the agreement.
