International media outlet BBC is to cut 1,800 to 2,000 jobs. The BBC has announced that it will cut about 10 percent of its staff to reduce its financial pressure. The BBC's interim director-general, Talfan Davies, has said that the possibility of closing all channels or services remains.

'We need to look at everything. We need to save about 500 million pounds over the next two years. There will be some big and difficult decisions to make. But we will take all steps seriously,' he told Radio Four's BBC Media Show.

'The job cuts will be really difficult news for staff,' he said.

Philippa Childs, the head of the UK Broadcasting Association, warned that “such a large-scale staff reduction would be devastating for the BBC. The BBC currently has around 21,500 full-time staff.”

In an email to staff on Wednesday, acting director-general Talfan said the company was facing significant financial pressure.

“The gap between our costs and our income is widening. There are a number of reasons for this. Inflation is very high. Our licence fee and commercial income are under pressure and the global economy is in turmoil,” the email said.

Childs, the head of the BBC, said the BBC needed to be strengthened at a time when the news industry was becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few multinational corporations.

“The UK needs a more confident, ambitious and sustainably funded BBC than ever before,” she said. She said the government must put in place policies to make the BBC’s finances more secure and robust.
