US President Donald Trump has announced that the US Navy will immediately block the Strait of Hormuz. He made the announcement after talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, ended inconclusively. He said that Iran is extorting money from ships passing through the Strait. “I have instructed our Navy to search and intercept any ship that pays tolls to Iran in international waters. Anyone who pays illegal tolls will not have safe passage,” Trump wrote on his social media account Truth. He claimed that other countries would also help the US in this blockade. He also claimed that the US would remove bombs that Iran had placed in the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, the US Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, claimed that two US destroyers had passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has denied this claim. Direct talks between the US and Iran, which began in Islamabad on Saturday, ended without a conclusion on Sunday morning. The US was led by Vice President JD Vance in these talks, which lasted about 21 hours.
He said that although the US appeared in the talks with good intentions, it failed to convince Iran of its issues. He also said that the US team had repeated phone calls during the talks with President Donald Trump.
Trump has accused Iran of not being able to reach an agreement in the talks because it did not want to give up its nuclear weapons ambitions. 'The talks were cordial. We reached an agreement with them on almost everything. But they were not ready to give up their nuclear ambitions. And, this issue was key for us. Iran will never be able to build a nuclear weapon,’ Trump told Fox News.
Even though the Iran-US talks failed, it was expected that a new round of talks would be held. Because, there are still 10 days left until the two-week temporary ceasefire expires. However, the entry of US troops into Hormuz has added new tension.
Earlier, a member of the Iranian delegation had claimed in an interview with Fars News that the US was just using the talks as an excuse.
He had claimed that the US was trying to escape from West Asia. He had said that Iran had maintained its position on control of the Strait of Hormuz, peaceful nuclear energy development and some other issues. He also claimed that there were no plans to hold another round of talks with the US.
