Joe Kent, the director of the Trump administration's counterterrorism center, has resigned from his post, citing disagreements over the subject and process of the Iran war.
He also urged President Trump to change his position in a statement issued on social media.
In a letter posted on his X account, Kent, the center's director, said that Iran is not an immediate threat to the United States.
He claimed that the Trump administration started this war under pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.
Kent, 45, a veteran of the US Special Forces and the CIA, had long contributed to the homeland at home and abroad.
His wife, Shannon Kent, also served as a 'cryptologic technician' in the US Navy. Mrs. Kent was killed in a suicide attack in Syria in 2019.
Joe Kent said in his letter, “By June 2025, Trump understands that the war in the Middle East has cost America precious lives and has diminished our nation’s wealth and prosperity.”
Kent further said, “High-ranking Israeli officials and influential American journalists have spread ‘disinformation’ that has undermined Trump’s ‘America First’ platform. It was used to convince you that Iran is a major threat to the United States. This was a lie.”
Kent, a longtime Trump supporter, was appointed director of the US Counterterrorism Center in July last year.
Kent has previously deployed overseas with the US military 11 times. This includes a deployment of US military special forces in Iraq.
Kent, a veteran of the US intelligence agency CIA, left government service after the death of his wife.
In his letter, Kent cited his military service and the death of his wife, saying, “I cannot support sending the next generation to fight and die in wars that do not serve the American people and do not justify the cost of American lives.”
Several senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration have resigned, including Securities and Exchange Commission Enforcement Director Margaret Ryan and Kennedy Center President Rick Grenell.
However, the rate of officer turnover in the president’s second term has been much lower than during his first term from 2017 to 2021.
