US President Donald Trump has warned NATO member states to provide immediate military assistance to open the Strait of Hormuz. He also warned that the future of the NATO alliance would be in jeopardy if member states did not stand with the US. In a telephone conversation with the British newspaper Financial Times, Trump said that the Hormuz region is important for global energy security. He said that since Europe and China consume a large part of the oil passing through this region, they should also participate in the effort to open the blockade. Earlier, Trump had called on Japan, China, Europe and other countries to send their military ships to open the blockade. However, many countries have not responded. NATO members are not sending assistance to the US.
Trump said, "Those who benefit the most from the waterway passing through the Strait of Hormuz should help open it." If there is a negative response to this request or no response at all, the future of NATO will be very bad.'
He claimed that the US had given Europe great support in the Ukraine issue and now Europe will look to the US for support in the security of Hormuz.
Although the US has always been committed to the security of NATO allies, he said that it is not right for them to not come when they are needed.
Trump said that Britain is a long-standing ally of the US. However, he also complained that Britain did not send a ship in time when the US asked for help in the Iran war.
'The UK sent a warship only after the US attacked and weakened Iran. We needed help when we needed it, not after we had won,' Trump said.
