Regional tensions rise after Iran fires missiles at Israel
Iran fired missiles into Israeli territory on Saturday, raising tensions in the Middle East to a new high.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the strike and said they had activated their missile defense system and directed citizens in the affected areas to take immediate shelter via mobile alerts.
The IDF said, “We identified the missiles fired from Iran some time ago. Defensive systems are operational to prevent the risk.” The incident came amid rising military tensions in the region and weeks of high-stakes nuclear talks between Iran and other countries.
While the full scope of the direct attack is still being assessed, analysts say it signals a significant retaliatory step in the wider conflict between the two countries. The Indian government has warned its citizens to exercise extreme caution, stay indoors and avoid unnecessary activities.
The Indian embassy in Tehran has already issued a security advisory, advising against travel to Oman or other safe countries if necessary.
Meanwhile, Israel has declared a nationwide state of emergency, ordering hospitals to be moved underground and sirens to be activated. Iran, Israel and Iraq have closed their airspace and all commercial flights have been suspended.
Iranian officials have warned of a “brutal response” in response to a joint military strike launched by Israel and the US the previous day. Israel, in a joint operation called Roaring Lion, targeted Iranian military bases, missile production facilities and areas near the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Witnesses reported hearing powerful explosions in Tehran, and tensions have risen at several sites in the capital. The current situation has raised fears of a wider regional conflict and the international community is closely monitoring it.
