Nemisio Oseguera Carventes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), known as ‘El Mencho’, was one of the world’s most notorious drug traffickers, has been killed in a military operation in Mexico.

He was killed in a shootout with police. The CJNG, led by former police officer Oseguera, had become a powerful and ruthless criminal group in Mexico. Mexico's federal security forces launched operations in various states. In the process, four CJNG members were killed in Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco, according to the police. Three police officers were also injured in the process.

Riots broke out in various parts of the state. After Nemesio was killed, suspected drug traffickers from his network have spread violence in various areas, police say. They have burned buses and clashed with security forces.

The US State Department has appealed to its citizens to stay in safe accommodation or hotels in Mexico until further notice.

The operation was carried out in a planned and precise manner, according to the Mexican Ministry of Defense. Mexican Air Force aircraft and the National Guard were also deployed in the operation. The ministry said a large number of armored vehicles were seized in the raid.

Mexico's National Security Agency said US officials provided valuable information. A US defense official also said the US task force played a key role. However, no further details were released. The US State Department had previously announced a $15 million reward for information on the 59-year-old Nemesio.

The CJNG cartel originated in Jalisco in 2010. It now has influence throughout Mexico. The group also supplies large quantities of drugs to the US. It makes billions of dollars from the production of fentanyl.
