The Indian government has issued a formal advisory to its citizens to leave Iran amid fears of possible US military action in Iran. Assessing the rising regional tensions, the Ministry of External Affairs has urged them to exercise caution and return home through available flights.
In a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran on social media, it said, "In view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian citizens currently there are advised to leave Iran using available means of transport, including commercial flights." The embassy has also urged all Indian citizens and people of Indian origin to exercise special caution, stay away from protest areas, stay in touch with the embassy and stay updated with local media.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, there are about 10,000 Indian citizens living in Iran. The government believes that the current unstable situation has created a situation where their safety must be prioritized.
The warning was made public ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel scheduled for Wednesday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday expressed hope that the visit would strengthen new cooperation to confront "radical" challenges. Modi also said on social media that he was "looking forward" to the discussions during his visit to Israel. "India deeply values an enduring friendship with Israel based on trust, innovation and a shared commitment to peace and progress," he wrote.
