Protests in Iran, which had been suspended for a while after a violent crackdown in January, have resumed. Students began protesting on Saturday as the new semester began on campuses of Tehran's Sharif University of Technology.

Similarly, after observing silence in memory of those killed last January, they marched carrying the national flag. They were immediately confronted by government supporters.

A peaceful sit-in program was also held at Shahid Behesti University in the capital, the BBC reported.  Similarly, anti-government protests have taken place on several university campuses, including Amir Kabir University in Tehran.

A large number of people were killed last month when the government violently suppressed the protests.  Internet and information restrictions made it difficult for international media to confirm the exact number of deaths.

The US-based Human Rights News Agency (HRNA) said it had confirmed at least 6,159 deaths.  HRNA had said it had not confirmed the death toll, although it had received reports of an additional 17,000 deaths.

Britain-based Persian-language media outlet Iran International said at least 32,000 people had been killed. Iranian officials said late last month that more than 3,100 people had been killed.

Talks with the US and preparations for war

Saturday's protests come as Iranian officials prepare for a possible war with the US. The US has been stationing the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea for a long time.

Similarly, the world's largest warship, the USS Ford, is heading from the Caribbean Sea to the Arabian Sea. US President Donald Trump has said that the option of a military strike on Iran is open. Talks are also underway between the two countries over their nuclear programs.

The second round of indirect talks was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
