Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq Rahman to visit India.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of India handed over Modi's invitation message to Tariq after his swearing-in.  Birla represented India at Tariq's swearing-in. 'I take this opportunity to invite you, Dr. Zubaida Rahman and your daughter Zaima to visit India at your convenient time. We look forward to welcoming you warmly in India,' Modi wrote in a letter dated February 16.

In the letter, Modi congratulated Rahman on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's  landslide victory in the parliamentary elections.

'I congratulate you on the victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the recently concluded parliamentary elections in Bangladesh and on your appointment as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh,' the letter said. 'I wish you every success in assuming the high responsibility of this office.  Your victory is a testament to the faith and trust the people of Bangladesh have shown in your leadership and in your vision to take the country forward on the path of peace, stability and prosperity.'

Modi said India and Bangladesh share a shared history and close cultural ties.

Modi said he looks forward to working closely with the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh to strengthen multifaceted bilateral relations, enhance regional cooperation and advance shared goals in connectivity, trade, technology, education, skill development, energy, healthcare, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

'As fast-growing economies and ambitious societies, India and Bangladesh can truly be catalysts for each other's sustainable development. Can work for each other's security and enable mutual prosperity,' the letter said.
