Somalia has signed a military cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia. The agreement was signed in Riyadh on Monday between Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moallem Fiki and his Saudi counterpart Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.
The Somali Ministry of Defense said, “The agreement aims to strengthen the framework of defense and military cooperation between the two countries, and it includes many areas of common interest that meet the strategic interests of both sides.” Prince Khalid said the agreement was made through the social network X. However, he did not disclose detailed details on this matter. Somalia signed a security agreement with Qatar just last month. Israel announced in December that it would recognize Somaliland, a region that declared itself separate from Somalia, as a new country. Israel is the first country in the world to recognize Somaliland. Somalia has been accusing Israel of opening a military base here with the aim of attacking neighboring countries. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. said that Israel’s plan will be thwarted at all costs.
It is seeking regional support to strengthen its security situation for that. The East African country of Somalia is a member of the Arab League.
Similarly, Somalia suspended all agreements with the UAE last month. This includes port operations and security agreements. Somalia accused the UAE of supporting Israel's move to recognize the independence of Somaliland.
Earlier in 2020, the UAE had improved its relations with Israel. In December, when Arab Islamic countries issued a statement opposing Israel's move to recognize Somaliland, the UAE did not sign. However, in January, the UAE issued a joint statement with the African Union. It stated that it respects Somalia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and stability.
