British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff, who was embroiled in controversy after appointing Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States despite his ties to convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, resigned on Sunday.

Downing Street chief of staff Morgan McSweeney said in a statement: "After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged the trust in our party, our country and our politics."

"I advised the prime minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice," he said.

McSweeney, an Irishman, has recently been described as "the most powerful man in British politics" after playing a key role in Starmer's impressive election victory in 2024.

He is credited with helping to steer the Labour Party towards a centrist policy agenda after the disastrous tenure of leader Jeremy Corbyn.
