At least 30 people were killed and more than 130 injured in a suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Friday, police said.
A senior Pakistani police official told AFP news agency that the blast occurred after Friday prayers at a mosque packed with worshippers. He said the attacker detonated his explosives at the gate of the mosque. AFP reported that several adults and children were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital on stretchers, by their arms and legs, or by being lifted. Doctors and witnesses were seen helping victims out of ambulances and backs of vehicles, their clothes covered in blood. Friends and relatives of the injured were already crowding the hospital. Another AFP team reported that armed security forces had cordoned off the mosque. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said those involved in the blast will be found and brought to justice. Pakistan is a Sunni-majority country, but Shiites make up 10 to 15 percent of the population.
