139 foreign nationals have been arrested in Iran on charges of involvement in ongoing anti-government protests.
Iran's Tasnim news agency quoted the police chief of Yazd city as saying that the arrested individuals were involved in protest, incitement and giving instructions and were in contact with networks outside the country.
However, the nationalities of the arrested individuals were not disclosed. Police chief Ahmad Negahban said that a review of cases related to the protesters had concluded that 139 of those arrested were foreigners.
Tehran has admitted that more than 3,000 people have been killed in the protests so far, attributing the violence to terrorist acts and saying that most of the victims were members of the security forces and innocent people.
The Human Rights Activist News Agency, a non-governmental organization, confirmed that 6,854 people had been killed, with most of the protesters killed by security forces. Meanwhile, other rights groups have estimated that the death toll could be higher.
