A trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine and the United States has concluded in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Russia's state news agency Tass reported that "some results have been achieved," citing an anonymous source.
The Russian media outlet RT reported that the meeting could be held again in the UAE after some time. Ukrainian officials also said that the talks were positive . Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that the meeting could be held again next week. US officials involved in the talks said that a new meeting would be on February 1.
While the talks in the UAE were taking place, Russia and Ukraine were on the battlefield with each other. Ukraine said that Russia had carried out drone and missile attacks on its energy infrastructure and physical assets, killing one person and injuring 35. Similarly, Russia said that three health workers had been killed when Ukraine attacked an ambulance.
This is the first time that representatives of Russia, Ukraine and the US have held talks since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukraine included the head of the National Security Council Rustem Umarov, the chief of the General Staff Andriy Hrynatov, and the head of the Presidential Administration Kirill Budanov in the negotiating team.
Similarly, the Russian team included President Vladimir Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov, military officer Admiral Igor Kostyukov, and high-ranking security officials. The US team included President Donald Trump's envoy Steven Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner.
Although many other issues were agreed upon, the border dispute in particular has become a complicated issue between the two countries. Russia has demanded that Ukrainian troops withdraw from the Donbas region, accepting the new borders and new realities created after the war. But Ukraine has been saying that it cannot hand over its territory.
Russia controls more than 97 percent of Luhansk, one of the two provinces in the Donbas region. Similarly, 70 percent of Donetsk is under Russian control.
Similarly, Russia has a condition that Ukraine must commit to never becoming a member of NATO. Ukraine has sought security commitments and support from the United States and Western countries to guarantee that it will not be attacked in the future.
