Trump backs down on tariff hikes on European countries

What you should know

US President Donald Trump has backed away from threatening to impose tariffs on European countries that disagree with his plan to annex Greenland.

He warned that starting February 1, 10 percent tariffs would be imposed on goods coming from those countries, and that the tariff could rise to 25 percent.

But , After meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday, he said there were no plans to increase tariffs.

He said on social media that he had discussed with NATO Secretary-General about developing a common understanding of the future of Greenland and the Arctic region.

He did not elaborate on the concept. If this solution can be found, it will be a great achievement for the United States and all NATO member states ,’ Trump wrote after meeting with Rutte on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

This concept will address security , resources means and all issues, he claims.  Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rosmussen said the meeting was a good sign.

' The day is ending better than it started ,'  The statement he issued said ,' '

Let's now discuss how to find a way to address US security concerns while taking into account the Danish Kingdom's borders in the Arctic.'

US media have said that there may be plans to build additional US military bases in Greenland. According to the existing agreement between Denmark and the US, the US can bring as many troops as it wants to Greenland. Currently, about 100 US security personnel are permanently stationed at the Pitufik base in Greenland. In the Danish parliament, one of Greenland's two MPs has questioned the legitimacy of talks with NATO about the minerals and resources of the island of Funen.  ' NATO has no right to negotiate with other parties about Greenland without Greenland's consent. Nothing is decided about us without us,'  Aja Chemnits said.
