At least 21 dead in Spain train crash

At least 21 people have died in two train crashes in Spain, with authorities warning the death toll could rise. Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said more than 30 people were seriously injured in the incident.

A high-speed train travelling from Malaga to Madrid in southern Spain derailed and crashed into another track. The train derailed in Adamuz, Cordoba, about 10 minutes after leaving Malaga, the rail company said. It was carrying 300 passengers. A short time later, a second train travelling in the opposite direction from Madrid to Huelva also derailed.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the country was suffering "deep pain". He said an investigation would be launched. Rescue workers said they were struggling to recover the bodies of the dead and the survivors trapped in the wreckage.  All train services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended following the accident.  King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain expressed their condolences to the victims. They wished the injured a speedy recovery.
