Greenlanders have gathered in the capital, Nuuk, to protest US President Donald Trump's plan to acquire Greenland.

Greenlanders have gathered in the capital Nuuk to protest US President Donald Trump's plan to acquire Greenland.

Euro News, citing local officials, said that about a quarter of Greenland's total population participated in the demonstration. Greenland is home to about 56,000 people. Officials said the demonstration was the largest in Greenland's history.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, along with lawmakers and government officials, participated in the demonstration.

The protesters carried placards reading 'Greenland is not for sale' along with the national flag. The protesters chanted slogans as far as the US consulate in Nuuk, Greenland's capital.

Greenland MP Tilly Martinusen expressed hope that the Trump administration would back down from its multi-party plan. “At first they promoted themselves as our friends and fellow travelers. They claimed that they would make Greenland better than Denmark,” he said, “now they are warning us.”

A demonstration in favor of Greenland was also held in Denmark on Saturday. A large number of people also participated in this demonstration in Copenhagen.

This demonstration, organized in collaboration with various organizations including Action Aid Denmark, saw a large participation of Greenlanders in Denmark. According to Danish officials, about 17,000 Greenlanders live in Denmark.

The Americans themselves are not happy with the decision to annex Greenland to the United States. A recent poll by Reuters and IPSOS showed that only 17 percent of Americans agreed with Trump’s plan to annex Greenland. Trump has responded that this survey is wrong. Meanwhile, Trump has decided to increase customs duties by 10 percent on eight European countries. Countries that support Greenland's autonomy - Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland - have increased customs duties by 10 percent, effective from February 1.

He has also warned that this duty could increase by 25 percent. French President Emmanuel Macron, along with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have opposed the decision to increase customs duties.
