Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has admitted that thousands of people have been killed in the protests.

In a public address on Saturday, he acknowledged that thousands of people had been killed in the protests, some inhumanely.

“Those linked to Israel and the US caused great damage and killed thousands,” Iranian state media quoted Khamenei as saying, adding, “We hold the US president guilty of this death. He has inflicted damage and humiliation on Iran.” The Iranian government has previously accused its enemies of supporting the riots.

In his address on Saturday, Khamenei blamed the US for the latest unrest. He had previously written on social media, “America’s goal is to swallow Iran.” The exact number of people who have lost their lives in the anti-government protests that have been going on in Iran since December 28 has not been released. Different agencies are giving different figures.

Earlier, the British media outlet The Times had quoted doctors working in hospitals in Tehran as saying that at least 12,000 people had died. The US-based Iranian Human Rights Watch (HRW) confirmed the death toll at 3,090, but said it was difficult to obtain clear information due to internet restrictions.

US President Donald Trump had recently urged Iranian protesters to continue their protests. He also warned that the US could intervene militarily if the government cracked down on the protests.
